About This Organization

Utahns Against Hunger works on the state, local and federal level to ensure that low-income Utahns have access to federal nutrition programs. UAH does this through advocacy, outreach and education with low-income communities, elected officials and other policy makers.

UAH continues to work to increase participation in the School Breakfast Program, and will be releasing the second edition of “Starting the Day Right: Best Practices for Increasing School Breakfast Participation in Utah Schools.” This report describes alternative breakfast delivery models that can help increase school breakfast participation.

UAH grew the SNAP outreach program in 2017 and has recruited and trained 11 community organizations conduct SNAP outreach and enrollment activities during the two year’s they have managed Utah’s SNAP Outreach Plan.

For nearly a decade UAH has worked to increase access to healthy local food by providing technical and financial support to farmers markets and farm stands, to help them accept SNAP benefits. This year UAH assisted 6 new markets to accept SNAP, bringing the total number of markets accepting SNAP to 25.

Our advocacy work has also impacted Utahns. UAH fought an increase to the state sales tax on food during the 2017 Utah State Legislative Session, and protected funding for emergency food providers. Federally, we worked with Representative Chris Stewart & Representative Mia Love, persuading them to co-sponsor the Military Hunger Prevention Act.
