About This Organization

Tricycle is cultivating a new generation of farmers in the heart of the city. The organization transforms unused urban spaces into food producing farms, orchards and gardens of beauty, food and community gathering. The Urban Agriculture Certification is supported and recognized by the USDA/NRCS and is earned through an 11-month fellowship that teaches the practice and business of sustainable urban agriculture. Tricycle has developed and manages over a dozen urban ag sites across the region that include their city’s two urban farms, five community gardens, four children’s gardens, an urban orchard, and Healing Gardens with their local hospital network. They use their farm sites to train a new generation of urban farms through their urban ag fellowship that teaches participants the business and practice of sustainable urban agriculture. The bounty from their farms is used to address food access in their city through RVA’s Citywide Healthy Store Program- Corner Farm and their Four Season Farmer’s Markets. Children and families are encouraged to dig in with the staff and fellows of Tricycle by participating in a Way to Grow Urban Farm Tour or field trip.
