About This Organization

In the US, farmers over the age of 65 outnumber farmers under the age of 35 by a margin of six to one. The organic and local food movements are inspiring a new generation to farm, but it has never been harder to get started. The National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC) works to ensure young people can build viable farm businesses that can support themselves and their families. In the seven years since its founding, NYFC has launched 40 farmer-led chapters in 28 states; won funding for training and support programs for beginning farmers in the 2014 Farm Bill; won better access to credit for beginning farmers through the Farm Service Agency; brought farmers face-to-face with elected officials in D.C. and across the country; worked with land trusts nationally to keep farmland affordable and in production; developed an online Land Affordability Calculator to help farmers make informed financial decisions when purchasing land; and trained hundreds of farmers to navigate central business challenges including food safety regulations, FSA loans, and land access.

    ABOUT THE GUIDE

The James Beard Foundation, Food Tank, and Valrhona, along with a prestigious advisory group of food system experts, developed the “Good Food Org Guide.”

This definitive Guide highlights nonprofit organizations that are doing exemplary work in the United States in the areas of food and agriculture, nutrition and health, hunger and obesity, and food justice.

Only nonprofit, scholarly, and municipal initiatives have been selected in order to spotlight efforts that are focused on community building and engagement, advocacy, and service.
