About This Organization

1506663_10152152119123734_402208980_nThe Livestock Conservancy is working to protect over 150 heritage breeds of livestock and poultry from extinction. The Conservancy is a hub for rare breed conservation in the U.S. and conducts research, education, and promotes rare breed agriculture. The Conservancy has been a key actor in the protection of at least 17 endangered breeds of livestock and poultry from extinction in its 40 years of existence. This past year, The Livesrock Conservancy published its newest book, Managing Breeds for a Secure Future, Second Edition. This is the go-to book for domesticated animal breeders and greatly expands on the original title. publiched in 2007. Additionally, they expanded their Heritage Clicks in the Classroom Program, distributing heritage poultry eggs to classrooms with over 4,000 children in 3 U.S. states to incubate and hatch, teaching them about biodiversity in agriculture and embryology. In April 2016, they cheld their fourth annual “From Service to Stwardship” workshop to train military veterans to raise heritage breeds and in October they completeda 10 year North American Poultry Census.
