About This Organization

The Hawai`i Public Seed Initiative helps farmers and their communities learn to grow, harvest, preserve and share seeds. They operate an online Seed Variety Selection Tool to help people select what might do well in their microclimate in Hawai`i. Seed production and saving resources are available on their website http://kohalacenter.org/hpsi/resources. In the past Hawai`i Public Seed Initiative has conducted statewide 2 day seed educational workshops and trained seed leaders on each island. It has also awarded mini-grant funds in 2014-15 to promote seed sharing, education and seed variety trials that have helped to determine performance of different varieties of locally adapted seed. Presently Hawai`i Public Seed Initiative is coordinating a statewide group of seed growers, Hawai`i Seed Growers Network, who are producing locally adapted seed varieties, found to perform well in their sub-tropical microclimates. This seed is now available for sale at their online marketplace www.hawaiiseedgrowersnetwork.com

This definitive Guide highlights nonprofit organizations that are doing exemplary work in the United States in the areas of food and agriculture, nutrition and health, hunger and obesity, and food justice.
