About This Organization

10915294_775687099168794_3038419774580464866_nThe Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT) is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to permanently protecting Iowa land for sustainable food production. SILT accepts land and easement donations all across the state from landowners who want to make land available to next-generation, sustainable food farmers. SILT takes land speculation out of the equation by sharing farm ownership with the farmer. Where the Trust owns the land, the farmer can own the home, barn and business, i.e. everything on top of it, allowing the farmer to build equity over time, while not needing to finance the most expensive piece: the land. Where the Trust owns the easement, the farmer owns the land, but as that farm comes up for sale, it can only be sold to a sustainable food producer, which reduces the value of the land and making it more affordable for a beginning farmer. SILT then monitors its land over time to ensure that sustainable best practices are adhered to and increased. SILT works with Equity Trust, the National Young Farmers Coalition, Practical Farmers of Iowa, the Iowa Alliance for Responsible Agriculture, the Iowa Environmental Council and other organizations to create regional, sustainable food systems that rebuild our rural economies and local food infrastructure, while increasing soil health and water quality in Iowa.
