About This Organization

1382404_10151928220776600_431417916_nMain Street Project focuses on changing the current conventional system by deploying an alternative, small-scale, and regenerative poultry-based systm that is accessible and economically viable for aspiring Latino and other immigrant farmers. Their new, 100-acrew reserach farm near Northfield, MN, serves as a hub for system demonstration and catalysi for rgional expansion, offering field taining for new and established farmers in both Spanish and english. At the heart of their model is free-range meat and egg poultry, raised in well-managed 1.5 acres paddocks planted with a combination of perennials (hazelnuts and elderberies), cover crops and small grains that maximise the system’s productive capactiy and efficiency. They’ve adapted the model to other ecological, economic and social conditions in order to develop best practices, priniples and criteria to guide replications. To date, the have launched a sistet system, in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexicu; are nearing completion of a demonstration/training center in partnership with Thunder Vally CDC in Porcupine, South Dakota; and recently completed a blueprint for a new system in the tropical rainforest of Northern Guatemala that is in early stages of implementation by a consortium of regional farmers cooperatives.
