About This Organization

10441093_527015400732283_171907285963411488_nThe Illinois Food Scrap Coalition focuses on advocacy and the development of programs and policies to advance Illinois’ composting initiatives. The Coalition has created the We Compost Program, a voluntary recognition program for restaurants, institutions, and businesses who compost food scraps. They have also published the “Food Scrap Composting Challenges and Solutions in Illinois Report” and a how-to guide for restaurants on composting and are set to conduct 4 policy forums in 2016. The Illinois Food Scrap Coalitioni celebrated its one year anniversary as a General No-profit this year, creating a SEAR Economic Impact and Market Study Report that has been distrbuted widely to decision makers, composters, and stakeholkds. The study forecasts the impact of building the food scrap composting industry in Illinois, including jovs created and local and state tax revenue. Currently, there are 23 communitities in Northern Illinois that have residential curbside food scrap coloect, and they have opened 141 We Compost esablishtments.
