About This Organization

14479783_10154546351359717_1187181332265578267_nHunger Task Force believes that every person has the right to adequate food obtained with dignity. We work to prevent hunger and malnutrition by providing food to people in need today and by promoting social policies to achieve a hunger free community tomorrow. Hunger Task Force is Milwaukee’s Free & Local food bank and Wisconsin’s leading anti-hunger organization. We were established in 1974 by a group of citizen advocates who were working to establish a school breakfast program in Milwaukee Public Schools. In the early 1980s, we formed Milwaukee’s first food bank. Today, Hunger Task Force serves over 50,000 people each month and is supported 100% by the local community.

Hunger Task Force operates a Free & Local food bank that delivers healthy food free of charge to a network of 74 food pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters in Milwaukee County. Our food bank is the only food bank in the nation that operates according to the USDA’s MyPlate model of nutrition standards. We also operate a 208-acre urban farm that grows fresh fruits and vegetables for the hungry, and a Mobile Market grocery store on wheels that brings healthy food to underserved neighborhoods. We develop nationally recognized models that feed families and keep our community strong and healthy.

Hunger Task Force also fights to end future hunger by advocating for strong federal nutrition programs, including FoodShare, school meals, summer meals, WIC and senior nutrition programs. True to our roots as advocates, we continue to educate, organize, research and lobby for an end to hunger in our community and state.
