About This Organization

945592_374108879375747_339761885_nFood Shift is a nonprofit social enterprise developing collaborative models that reduce wasted food, feed communities, and provide jobs. Through expanding the capacity for food recovery, processing and distribution, it is our mission to increase access to nutritious food and create an engine for job creation. Food Shift integrates education, environmentalism, and workforce development as part of a holistic vision for healthy and sustainable communities and individuals. Food Shift has had numerous notable successes across the breadth of its programming including: developing The Food Shift Kitchen social enterprise; serving as consultants to businesses, organizations, and regional governments to develop and advise around food efficiency innovation; and providing education and leadership in the movement to reduce wasted food. Food Shift’s main program at this time is The Food Shift Kitchen (TFSK) which launched in July 2016 and has been steadily increasing its impact each month. Using fresh fruits and vegetables from farms, grocers, and distributors that would otherwise be discarded due to imperfections, The Food Shift Kitchen creates nutritious food products, which are then sold throughout the community and provided to food insecure communities. The Food Shift Kitchen trains and employs Alameda Point Collaborative residents, the majority of whom were unemployed, formerly homeless, and living below the poverty line. Food Shift works collaboratively with communities, businesses and governments to develop sustainable solutions that reduce wasted food and hunger. Most recently, Food Shift was hired by Santa Clara County, CA to conduct research and compile a report outlining existing food recovery programs, barriers identified by the community, and suggested steps of government action to improve the current food recovery system in the county.
