About This Organization

46567_807658119251060_1184014782_nFood Policy Action was established in 2012 by a collaboration of national food policy leaders to hold legislators accountable for their votes on a broad range of food policy issues. FPA has emerged to become the political arm of the food movement, recently publishing its sixth annual National Food Policy Scorecard. FPA lobbies Congress in support of healthy meals in schools, food assistance program for low-income Americans, wasted food reduction, organic food standards, clean water, and other issues. Based on scores from the National Food Policy Scorecard, FPA uses a combination of aggressive media and electoral outreach targeting members of Congress who have voted against a more balanced food system. In 2018, FPA plans to hire community organizers in key districts to highlight food issues through earned media, local chef mobilization, grassroots and grasstops support, and awareness-raising, high-visibility events such as local food truck activities, and “fly-out” events that bring chefs from around the country to local communities for earned media coverage and social media activism. As one Senator said to Tom Colicchio, FPA founding member: “We might have voted differently if we knew someone was paying attention.” As the political voice of the good food movement, FPA’s goal is to remind them that we are paying attention and their constituents care about the votes they take on good food policies every election cycle. In 2015, FPA established a separate education fund to advance solutions that support healthy food access for all. Food Policy Action Education Fund works to elevate the national dialogue on food issues through public education, issue advocacy, and engagement on federal policy and its effects on the food system. FPA-EF unites advocates across the spectrum of the food movement on diverse issues such as nutrition, organic foods, local community agriculture, beginning farmers, and clean water. This broad perspective provides a unique and crucial platform to communicate with national decision-makers that holistic food system reform is important to voters and that they have a responsibility to their constituents create a more balanced system that provides healthy affordable food for all.
