Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P.) seeks to encourage people to look at their food choices as a force for social change. F.E.P. encourages choices that reflect a more compassionate society by spotlighting the abuse of animals on farms, the depletion of natural resources, unfair working conditions for produce workers, the unavailability of healthy foods in communities of color and low-income areas, and the importance of not purchasing chocolate that comes from the worst forms of child labor. This year, F.E.P completed focus groups in Vallejo, conducting one focus group Wednesday in May in five different areas of the city. During these session, they fed everyone a vegan meal, gifted them $50 for their time and asked them a series of questions on the barriers they have experienced in accessing healthy foods and what they see as possible solutions, while also suggesting some solutions to gauge their interest level. F.E.P. plans to partner with Touro University in Vallejo to analyze this data. Additionally, Solano County’s Public Health department is using the data to assit them with convenience store makeovers.
