About This Organization

FBNYC_logoFood poverty is the number one cause of hunger in New York City, and to survive, 1.5 million New York City residents rely on Food Bank For New York City’s programs and services.
Many of them have to make a choice: pay for food or pay for necessities like rent, utilities, transportation, healthcare, childcare and medicine.
Food Bank For New York City serves all New York City residents who need help: women and children, the working poor, those who are unemployed or underemployed, the elderly, veterans, people with disabilities, and those without homes.

Established in 1983, Food Bank For New York City is the city’s major hunger-relief organization working to end hunger throughout the five boroughs. Food Bank takes a strategic, multifaceted approach that provides meals and builds capacity in the neediest communities, while raising awareness and engagement among all New Yorkers.
Food Bank serves a network of more than 1,000 community-based charities and schools citywide, including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior centers, after-school programs and more. Food Bank provides food, training, technical support, oversight, infrastructure assistance and grants.
Each year, Food Bank distributes more than 62.5million pounds of government, donated and wholesale food, including nearly 20 million pounds of produce.
Food Bank also provides income support services, including food stamps (also known as SNAP) assistance and free income tax-filing services for the working poor, both of which give low-income residents and their local economies more than an additional $150 million of food purchasing power.
In addition, Food Bank’s nutrition education programs and services empower more than 50,000 children, teens and adults to sustain a healthy diet on a limited budget.
All of Food Bank’s work is supported by research, advocacy and collaborative partnerships with government, not-for-profits, individuals, foundations and corporations.
