Desert Harvesters is a non-profit, grassroots effort based in Tucson, Arizona. They strive to promote, celebrate, and enhance local food and water security by encouraging the planting of rain along with indigenous, food-bearing perennial plants where they live, work, and play. They plant within or beside water-harvesting earthworks or rain gardens. This way these plants thrive and produce solely on passive rainwater irrigation – no imported surface or groundwater. Leaf drop, cut-up prunings, and fertility is also captured and reinvested in these same earthworks. Community workshops, demonstrations, and celebrations spread and evolve the practices; along with the book “Eat Mesquite and More: A Cookbook for Sonoran Desert Foods and Living” to be released in late 2017.
