About This Organization

12743487_10154569767822137_7641402023021655909_nCommunity Alliance for Global Justice is a grassroots, membership-based organization in Seattle that educates and mobilizes to strengthen the food sovereignty movement. CAGJ is committed to anti-oppressive organizing to build solidarity across diverse movements. CAGJ seeks to transform unjust trade and agricultural policies imposed by corporations, governments and other institutions while creating and supporting alternatives that embody social justice, sustainability, diversity and grassroots democracy. CAGJ does this through its three main areas of work: Food Justice Project, AGRA Watch and Trade Justice, focusing on solidarity campaigns with local groups across the food system – from grocery store workers to farmworkers – and working in regional, national, and international alliances and coalitions. CAGJ’s organizing activities include community education, workshops, teach-outs, leadership development, research, and direct action. CAGJ organizes an annual community gathering and locally-sourced, Fair Trade dinner, called Strengthening Local Economies Everywhere. CAGJ’s AGRA Watch campaign works closely with partner organizations in African civil society to challenge the Seattle-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in their support of the biotech industry and market-based industrial agricultural development. CAGJ is also currently co-organizing a campaign with Northwest Native Tribes to stop genetically-engineered salmon.
