About This Organization

307973_442832902452152_1478796201_nCity Schoolyard Garden (CSG) cultivates academic achievement, health, environmental stewardship, and community engagement through garden-based, experiential learning and leadership development for Charlottesville youth. Their eight schoolyard garden programs provide city youth experiences to discover and explore food, environment and culture. They currently manage eight gardens at Charlottesville public elementary, middle and high school,– encompassing over 38,383 square feet of diverse organic gardens for 3,200 youth with over 35,000 student garden hours each year. CSG is working with teachers, parents, school administrators, and community volunteers to utilize the gardens classroom instruction, after-school programs and summer camps to provide opportunities for youth to engage with nature, enhance their academic learning through hands-on experience, cultivate skills for healthy living and explore food justice and leadership. CSG also facilitates the Charlottesville Food Justice Network of over a dozen organizations working to build a healthy and just local food system.
