Founded in 1945, CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. CARE places special focus on working alongside poor girls and women because, equipped with the proper resources, they have the power to lift whole families and entire communities out of poverty. Their programs build on – and are inspired by – the vital roles that women play in smallholder agriculture around the world, meeting the food needs of their households and contributing to the development and growth of their livelihoods and sustainable futures for their households and communities. More than twenty years ago, CARE started to roll out its Village Savings and Loan (VSLA) programs around the world. Women earn an income for the first time of their lives. They become more confident by contributing to their household’s income, start claiming their right to decide on its spending – and often use it to buy nutritious food for their families, such as fish and meat at least once a month.
