About This Organization

546937_333489910121223_75511969_nArkansas GardenCorps is an AmeriCorps program hosted by the Childhood Obesity Prevention Research Program at the Arkansas Children’s Research Institute in Little Rock, AR. Arkansas GardenCorps promotes the use of school and community gardens to provide nutrition education with the purpose of reducing childhood obesity and to increase environmental awareness and sustainable agriculture practices in Arkansas communities. The organization’s members serve in school and community gardens across the state to develop and maintain gardens, conduct garden-based education, build volunteer and community support for sustainability of gardens, and increase access to garden-grown produce. Since Arkansas GardenCorps began in 2012, 68 individuals have served 32 service sites in 18 cities across the state, putting in over 92,000 hours of time. Collectively Arkansas GardenCorps members have recruited nearly 8500 volunteers who’ve donated 54,000 hours of their time to garden programs in Arkansas. Since 2014, members have delivered nutrition education to over 18,000 youth and have harvested and shared over 21,000 pounds of produce. Arkansas GardenCorps looks forward to expanding to 9 new sites during the 2017-2018 service year.
