About This Organization

11215774_724950067604783_1869293776384736628_n412 Food Rescue fights hunger and promotes sustainability by redirecting viable food from going to waste and directly distributing to organizations that serve those who are food insecure. 412 Food Rescue recovers food utilizing a truck and a growing corps of volunteer drivers mobilized by technology.

412 Food Rescue’s unique approach takes the problem through the lens of an urban food system, impacting waste at each stage of the food supply value chain. Utilizing technology to solve the logistics challenge of retail food recovery, 412 Food Rescue is the only organization in Allegheny County that focuses on food that would otherwise be discarded, impacting not only hunger but also the environment. 412 Food Rescue’s goal is to introduce innovative solutions to eradicate food waste in the region and expand its model to cities around the country.

To date, 412 Food Rescue has redirected over 1.5 million pounds of perfectly good food from going to landfills. The organization works with over 250 food retailers, 300 nonprofit partners and over 1400 volunteer drivers, our Food Rescue Heroes. 412 Food Rescue’s technology platform focuses on the logistics of facilitating a last-mile transport network and is tailored to the unique needs of retail food recovery. Features of the technology platform include an alert system for ad hoc rescues, scheduling for recurring rescues, and the first mobile food safety training for food rescue volunteers.

412 Food Rescue’s other programs include an UglyCSA-a CSA solely focused on imperfect and otherwise unsellable produce; Hidden Harvest-an urban gleaning program and an innovative product portfolio that includes LOAF, beer made from surplus bread; FORAGED, alcoholic beverages from foraged apples; and an ice cream series from foraged fruit.
